I try not to write too much (aside from working on my currently large backlog of reviews) over the weekend, but I just want to give you guys a heads up of a major server announcement coming in the next couple of days. Without saying who is launching what, wait for some linkage sometime early this week.

I managed to attend a couple days of Sun Microsystems’ JavaOne, which is always a good time, except for one little problem: norovirus!
Here is an e-mail all attendees received on Thursday:
The JavaOne conference team has been notified by the San Francisco Department of Public Health about an identified outbreak of a virus in the San Francisco area. Testing is still underway to identify the specific virus in question, but they believe it to be the Norovirus, a common cause of the “stomach flu”, which can cause temporary flu-like symptoms for up to 48 hours. Part of the San Francisco area impacted includes the Moscone Center, the site of the JavaOne conference which is being held this week. We are working with the appropriate San Francisco Department of Public Health and Moscone representatives to mitigate the impact this will have on the conference and steps are being taken overnight to disinfect the facility. We have not received any indication that the show should end early, so will have the full schedule of events on Friday as planned. We hope to see you then.
It seems like at least 70 people got the virus, and an unknown number of other attendees may have norovirus-like symptoms. Not the best way to wrap up the computer show, but this is the first time I noticed a problem like this after attending at least 30 different events at the Moscone Center.

The JavaOne Conference in San Francisco has been underway for a couple of days now, and I just want to give you some linkage to the most important (IMO) news from the show so far:
Neil Young rocks JavaOne, and discusses Blu-ray/Java technology
Sun puts muscle behind JavaFX
Sun Microsystems Announces Technology Preview of Open Source Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server
Aside from that silly little bug that spread around to some attendees, it looks like the 15,000+ JavaOne attendees had a blast!

The Inq published a news article claiming PayPal is considering a move to ban “unsafe” Internet browsers
From The Inq:
Anyone using browsers like Apple’s Safari, which offers no anti phishing protection, will first be warned that their chosen software is unsafe whenever they access the service.
I say PayPal should do whatever it can to help protect users, but stopping certain users from using the service due to an unsafe web browser? Is that crossing the line? I’m not sure, but I can’t wait to hear what the security experts think about the plan…

After constant nagging by friend Erica and a few members of Team Dawg, I managed to get out on the water and give windsurfing another shot today.
Even after something like three or four weeks of laziness, I was surprised how much better I seemed to be even though it was just my second time. Since I am super stubborn - especially when I can’t learn something on the first couple of tries - you guys can probably guess how I will spend part of my summer.

Earlier in the week I slipped into San Francisco to spend the afternoon visiting the ad:tech conference at the Moscone Center. Since my work for the day at BetaNews was completed, I simply wandered the floor and tried to meet a few new contacts who I will be able to contact in the future.
The main reason I went to the show was to visit with a couple of people who I have had the pleasure of meeting in the past. Bob Buskirk of Think Computers and John Chow of Johnchow.com were at the event, along with a number of other people I know.
I’ll discuss a couple of the neat things I saw at the show in future news posts.
Next week is the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco, and I hope to slip away to at least one or two afternoons of the event.

Sorry about the lack of updates, but if you felt the weather I can go cycling or running in, you would understand why I temporarily vanished…

I’m an avid open source person, and I am definitely not ashamed to admit it!
I tend to read several corporate blogs per day, and one of my favorite ones to read is from Barton George, a Sun Microsystems GNU/Linux guru.
Barton recently posted a couple of images from the 2008 Free Software Foundation’s meeting that recently took place in Boston, Mass. I recommend you head over to his latest blog entry to view a couple of pictures and hear his initial thoughts on the show.

I usually am happy to hear when people build robots, but this article published on TG Daily really bummed me out. According to TG Daily, an 81-year old was depressed he had to move from his home into a retirement home… and he took the matter into his own hands.
What was the device?
A jigsaw power tool actuated a .22 caliber pistol with four cartridges. Tovey was hit with four rounds after activating the machine in his driveway, according to witnesses who ran to the house after the shooting.
